"..In another study, when one group of college students was asked what type of person they'd be least inclined to wed, they said they'd sooner tie the knot with an embezzler, cocain user, ex-mental patient, shoplifter, nymphomaniac, communist, blind person, athiest or marijuana user than a fat person. Some people think it would be better if fat people were never born: one survey of parents found that 11 percent of them would ABORT a child they knew had a genetic tendency to be fat." And they say fat-phobia/fat discrimination doesn't exist! The exerpt is from "Losing It" by Laura Fraser

Duffy we are talking College students here. What do they know anyhow...These kids are what???? 17-19 years old range. Just wait!!!!!! These are the people that have things backfire in their faces. These are the ones that will end up being obese. Just wait and see. Let them come back to these students 10 years down the line and see where they stand and if they end up in our position. What goes around comes around. Good article though.

Joanne, the second study was with parents...not college students.

Who is Laura Fraser anyway? Is she the Howard Stern of journalists, just trying to get a response! If any of this is really true, is it right to display any of it and make overweight people feel even more inferior? You are no better then the college students who took part in the study and Laura Fraser who conducted it. Believing that the majority of college students choose all that, over fat is impossible to believe.

first of all you said a group of college students, she must have chose the druggie, drop-out loosers with no future. I think it is bull**** also. if a truly valid test was taken there would be more then 1 group and it would be with more people, more than one college, more age groups.
P.S. the average age of a college student is 21, look it up.
P.P.S The mentality of some college students is grade 6, she obviously talked to that group.

Calm down people...sheesh! The study was not done by Laura Fraser. Laura Fraser is a journalist who wrote a book....an expose on the diet/weight loss industry....who is also a recovering bulemic. She was reporting on a study (two studies) done by someone else. Read the book...you'll be surprised at what you see. She is not 'the Howard Stern' of journalism. It is a very insightful book. She did interviews with Richard Simmons (changed my opinion of him forever) and Susan Powter. She went, as a client, to many of the most popular weight-loss programs and reported on what they wanted her to do (she is approx 30 lbs 'overweight') including taking phen/fen (the book was written before it was taken off the market) and going on extremely low calorie diets.
With regard to the college student study, I can't say what group of students (or college or type of kids) were questioned, but the results were simple, they would not marry a fat person. Also of note, which I did not quote before, are studies done with children, as young as kindergarden/grade 1...who, when shown 'stick figure' people (no colour no faces) said the skinny ones were nicer and they would like them for their friends, and the fat ones were nasty, liars, and wouldn't want to make friends with them.
Also, since you don't know me, I find your attack on my personal character very rude.

Hey there Duffy !

Sounds like a real cat fight going on here.

That's interesting about the kindergarten and first grade children's perspective...wonder if they learned it at home or from their peers....

Let me share an "ouch" moment with you...this happened about 15 years ago...
I was at the park with my nephews when a little boy about 4 walked up to me and asked "Is the baby in your belly a boy or a girl?" I told him I didn't have a baby in my belly and he responded "Then you sure are fat !"

Now Duff, you know my tolerance level of little darlings, and I must say I was on VERY good behavior that day. I simply said "Bellies come in all sizes". and walked away. This kid would be around the age to be entering College now...wonder if they interviewed him....

BTW I really miss chatting with you in person.
Hope our lives return to sanity soon.

HUGS
