even though I am not a man :o I was just thinking how cool it is that you guys are part of diettalk. My husband would really like to start dieting...about a year ago, we were doing Atkins together, but he travels for work, and found it really hard to make the right choices...not that I don't think he could do it, I think it was more, all the choices he had to choose from. When a bunch of guys are eating burgers or pizza, I think it was hard for him to choose something else. Or lots of times, he has to eat out of vending machines, and that would be the worst. I don't know why I am posting this here, I just said to him, about the men in diettalk, and that I thought maybe he would like to get involved once he gets dieting...(he tries to be a little more macho) I don't know if he would sit and type his feelings, but I think it would do him the a world of good. Any of you guys in a similar situation with traveling? Any advice I can pass on to him. I know he really wants to lose weight...we could both use to lose about 100 pounds....he is still "young" I've got 10 years and a life time of dieting on him.....so I know he can do great...okay, I have rambled enough....I again want to tell you guys how great I think you are for being a part of diettalk...I have so much admiration for you guys that get in the middle of all us women and diet right along with us.....good luck to you all...Barb

Hi there Toni.....I often wondered, if I joined weight watchers, and then planned out his meals to follow WW, for my husband, if that would help. It is hard for him. How has your brother done with WW? I have friends that follow the program, but all women. Years ago, I belonged and was even a leader to a TOPS group(take of pounds sensibly), and there were 2 men in our group. They were great. They had a lot to lose, but they did awesome. Oh and by the way, I see you are from Sydney. That is my daughters name.....Sydney. Maybe sometime I could get you to send her a postcard of something with Sydney on it? We are collecting postcards for her. Plus that would be so cool....would it be expensive for a postcard and stamp(s). Let me know if you would consider it..and I could send you something.....my email is mia@sgi.net and if you wouldn't want to do that, not a problem..I would totally understand. My Sydney is "3". Talk to you soon.....Barb

Hi, I thought I' jump right in here in the men's forum along with you other women. My nephew, (who's in his early 20's) went on Weight Watchers about a year ago with his mom. She went to the meetings, he didn't. He just followed along. And he did great! They had both tried Atkins before that and he had a hard time when he went out with his friends. He thought WW was a lot more 'user friendly'. With WW, he could just watch his portions and still stay within his points. He lost 30 lbs. and looked wonderful at his wedding in June! ;)

Barb and Toni,

Well, I AM a man and very much in the minority in forums of this type. I'm not sure why it is, but it seems to me that so much weight loss and fitness information is geared to women, and men seem unable to seek support unless it deals with weight training. Even then, it's done cautiously. I guess it's a man thing.

Arrr. . .arrr. . .arrr (in best Tim Allen voice) ;)

I believe we all need help from time to time doing various things throughout life, including weight loss. I've gotten all of my support from women (including my beautiful wife) and I'm grateful for it! If you could convince your husband (Barb) or brother (Toni) to come here, then Mel and I (and any other men lurking in the DT forums) would have even greater support and an opportunity to speak about issues peculiar to men.

Brad

;) ;) I never remember that people tend to think I'm a man when they see the name 'Mel'. Mel can be short for Melody, Melanie, Millicent and many other names. Just thought I'd let you know that I'm a girl. 'I am woman, hear me roar' 8-}

Greetings ladies and gentlemen....I used to post on the men boards frequently, but all of my posting has taken a back seat to work..I know, I know..what am I thinking?! I do w.w. and went to exactly 3 meetings..and at every single meeting I was the only man. Okay, that's o.k...but I found that a significant number of women there needed to lose significantly less weight than I do. I didn't wanna say out loud "HA! 50 POUNDS? CRY ME A RIVER SISTER!!" I didn't wanna be insensitive b/c her 50 pounds sounds seems as insurmountable to her as the weight I need to lose sounds to me. I think that more men don't get involved in weight loss groups/discussions/web sites b/c of that most fragile of all creatures, the male ego. I'm 37..men of my generation grew up with fathers who would rather lose an arm than shown any sign of weakness or ask for help or discuss problems with other people. Fortunately today it's a different mindset. Tell your husband if he ever wants to talk food or football or anything, come join us. (one other problem I just thought of..the difference between men and women losing weight- I've noticed since I've been coming to DT that a lot of women suffer from cravings for sweets - a lot more chocoholics among women, I think than there are among men. It's my experience that most of the men I speak with don't wanna give up that meat 'n taters! When it's time to eat, men wanna EAT!)

GOOOOO JACKETS!!!! STING 'EM!!!!!!!

Hey Yellow... I know exactly how you feel. Sometimes I feel like the only man in existence here.

I have to say that IMHO, it doesn't matter how much you have to lose, its hard for anyone no matter if its 20lbs or 200lbs.

I've been struggling for the past 10 or so years to get rid of 30lbs. I finally have gotten down to where I can feel that I will reach goal. I don't know when but I take it day by day.

I'm down to 12lbs to go for my first goal and then I should probably drop another 10lbs for maintenance (according to the caculators) but I may not physically be able to handle that because I think 170 some is just not realistic for my build. So I choose 180lbs for goal. We need to be realistic in our goals, IMO.

We can all do it. We can all get to goal. It will just take time and a whole lot of effort but we can do it!!!

Now put down that beer... there are a lot of calories in it.. :)

Mel,

How right you are! Please forgive me for my insensitivity and assumptions. I should have known better (especially if I had read your posts a little closer) because I used to date a Mel--yes, of the female variety! ;) Please forgive me as I stand here with a very red face. :o I'm sorry.

Mel, I can really relate to people assuming you have a male name. My name is very confusing to most. Almost everyone I communicate with assumes that Gwenster is a female name. Its not.

Brad said I'm not sure why it is, but it seems to me that so much weight loss and fitness information is geared to women,

Brad I have found that women are the best communicators about weight issues, IMHO women are the professionals when it comes to dieting and and one reason I like Diettalk is that it has so many "professional" dieters to learn from.

I don't mean to disagree, but in my case I am a male chocoholic, I could eat chocolate exclusively if left to my own destructive ways! Of course I am a burgerholic, fried foodaholic, and everything-that-is-bad-for you-aholic too!
